The Brass Monkey is a brass sculpture that sits proudly in the centre of town. It was completed by local artist Chris Humphreys in 2004.  This friendly chap sits happily protecting his last two balls on a brass plate. He is a constant reminder of the Granite Belt’s very beautiful four seasons and a winter that is quite literally ‘cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey’.

This expression is one that comes from long ago when battles were fought on warships. Canon balls used to be placed on a dimpled brass plate next to the cannons. When the temperature dropped the brass would contract, causing the iron balls to fall out!

You can find the Brass Monkey on the corner of Maryland and Railway Streets, Stanthorpe near the newsagent and Brinx Deli
